In cases where storage space is not a concern, it is generally preferable to depict each molecule individually, for example, as a series of discrete records in a chemical database. However, there are also many cases where storage space is indeed at a premium; this is common in journal articles, for example. Sometimes also it is necessary to refer to the closely related molecules as a single unit; this is common in patents. These guidelines suggest some ways to refer to collections of chemical structures.
